
Tuscaloosa receives
American Community Award
The city of Tuscaloosa received the 2009
Entrepreneurial American Community Award on
Monday night Dec. 7th. at an
award ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The award was given by Partners for Livable
Communities, a Washington-based nonprofit
organization that promotes the livability of
communities through quality of life,
economic development and social equity.
Tuscaloosa was cited for its progress in
developing quality of life “through
leveraging its cultural assets for economic
development.”
Robert McNulty, Partners’ CEO, said, “By
focusing its energy and resources on
livability, economic vitality, enrichment of
human, natural and cultural resource,
creating a positive climate for business and
investing in the future, Tuscaloosa is well
on its way to becoming one of the most
livable communities in America.”
Partners served as the lead consultant group
for the “Culture Builds” initiative in
Tuscaloosa County.
Tuscaloosa City Councilwoman Cynthia Almond
accepted the award on the city’s behalf,
according to a release from the Chamber of
Commerce of West Alabama.
The release quoted her as saying, “Through
the partnership of the city of Tuscaloosa,
the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, the
University of Alabama, the city of
Northport, Tuscaloosa County and the Alabama
State Council on the Arts, we are seeing the
results of our collaborative efforts.
“Because of our cooperation, vision and
determination, our community is becoming an
exciting cultural destination that
translates into a sustainable, competitive
economy and an even more livable community.”
Tuscaloosa was the only municipality to
receive an award. Seven individuals and two
organizations also received awards in other
categories.
All America City Award
In June of 2002, Tuscaloosa was awarded the
All America City designation by the National
Civic League which is a non-profit,
non-partisan organization dedicated to
strengthening citizen democracy by
transforming democratic institutions. NCL
fosters innovative community building and
political reform, assists local governments,
and recognizes collaborative community
achievement. NCL accomplishes its mission
through technical assistance, training,
publishing, research, and the All-America
City Awards, America's original and most
prestigious community recognition program.
